Viber Bears Down on Skype With New Texting Feature
iPhone VoIP app Viber introduced a new update Thursday that introduces text messaging and some excellent UX refinements. Viber is growing fast (with 10 million downloads since its introduction), and smart updates like this will help make sure it keeps nipping at Skype's heels.

Boxee to add iPad support, more in May
Boxee confirmed on its blog that its next update will add support for the Apple iPad. The streaming content provider will release the Boxee for iPad app that will let you stream content from your Boxee Box to your Apple iPad over a wireless connection. This feature would be ideal for some late night Boxee watching from your bed or some entertainment while you log miles on your treadmill.
Besides iPad support, the browser will be faster and offer new on-screen controls. New languages such as French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Spanish, and Swedish and several bug fixes will also be included in this update. In keeping with its three-month update schedule, the new Boxee Box firmware will arrive in May.

Philip Elmer-Dewitt of Fortune's "Apple 2.0" blog points out that as of yesterday, Steve Jobs has officially beaten the odds yet again -- by surviving the "six weeks to live" pronouncement of doom the National Enquirer bestowed on him in mid-February. Nintendo says 3DS set sales record, to give numbers April 14
Nintendo told the media that the 3DS launch had set a company record for first-day sales. In trying to dampen concerns over the black screen of death, it said the sales were the "highest of any Nintendo hand-held system in our history" and that problems were "well below" usual hardware launches. More details would come on April 14, it said....

Apple Announces June 6 Start Date for WWDC 2011

Maximize browser performance with a RAMdisk
I've been using excellent tips found here to enhance Firefox performance including cache2ram.
I wanted to put not just the cache, but also the Firefox profile, and even other apps on the RAMdisk and some guides were a little too complex for my capabilities. So using a combination of portable apps, Esperance DV, and Carbon Copy Cloner, I'm able to easily run Firefox and VLC from a self-auto-restoring RAMdisk that I can simply eject if I need all of my RAM for work (e.g. CS5).
First download and install Esperance DV and set up your RAMdisk with the features you require. I checked 1GB, create on opening session, save in disk image (for CCC) and self auto restore. These setting can easily be modified later, thus Esperance DV is recommended.
Download your required portable applications (like Portable Firefox) from ...

Brittannica Concise Encyclopedia 2011 comes to iOS devices
Paragon Software group has teamed up with Encyclopaedia Brittanica Inc. to produce an iOS version of the Brittanica Concise Encyclopedia 2011 for iOS ($20) as an on-the-go information resource that can be accessed even without an internet connection. More than 25,000 articles and 2,700 images and maps are stuffed into the app, along with fun and useful features like "On This Day" and a "shake" action to see a random article....
